Dual Enrollment Courses
Deer Isle-Stonington High School has been collaborating with the University of Maine - Augusta and Thomas College to offer more dual enrollment classes in the classroom setting. We have seen an increased interest among our students to challenge themselves to take college courses before graduating high school. The best part of dual enrollment is that each student can take courses for FREE throughout high school, along with taking up to 12 credits per year.
What are Dual Enrollment classes?
Dual enrollment classes are courses that are taken through a college while the student is still enrolled in high school. When a student passes the class, they earn both high school and college credit.
How does Dual Enrollment Work?
Dual enrollment courses can be offered community college, a university, or a technical school.
Classes can be taken within a high school, online, or at a college/university.
The grade counts towards a high school transcript and will appear on a college transcript.
Benefits of Dual Enrollment:
Earns college credits early, which often lowers the cost of college for students.
Students experience real college-level coursework to help prepare academically for college.
Helps with the improvement of time management and academic skills.
It could help reduce the number of classes one needs to complete a college degree.
Strengthens a student's college application.
Requirements for Dual Enrollment:
A student must be a 10th grader (with permission), 11th grader, and 12th grader.
A student must obtain a certain GPA.
All students must get prior approval from a school counselor and a parent.
Types of Dual Enrollment Courses:
Core Subject Areas: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies
DISHS offers courses in English and Math in-person and is currently looking into expanding to other core subject areas.
Technical Courses: healthcare, automotive, culinary, etc.
Hancock County Technical Center offers courses through its programs, along with offering the Bridge Academy to students who apply and are accepted.
Elective Courses: psychology, art, public speaking, etc.
A lot of these elective courses are currently offered through the University of Maine System and Community College System online for students.
