Three mechanical engineering students from the UMaine Engineering program worked with DISHS Industrial Arts teacher Dennis Saindon last weekend to learn how to cast a part for their capstone project. The students have been participating in the Formula One Racing organization to design and build a race car for college students on a national level. All their work has to follow strict rules and deadlines. These students are working on a differential and were wondering if a cast aluminum gearbox could be used for their project. Mr. Saindon demonstrated the green sand casting process and the students have investigated using a CNC cut pattern to be cast in our shop. Hopefully the UMO students are willing to present this project to our students to show the importance of a presentation, and the parallels to our Applied Engineering projects. |
