I picked granite as my research project because I thought it

was an important element in the Deer Isle-Stonington history.

The Settlement Quarry interested me because it is the one

quarry I know the most about. The Settlement Quarry is a well

known place on the Island that many people hear about. Many

different types of rock and stone get mined out of this quarry

such as granite, gravel and dimension stone, etc.

I haven't had the opportunity to study granite, and this is a

wonderful opportunity to learn about it. I was curious about

what the history and background was behind all this stone!  As I

researched I found some older pictures on the internet and

also in books from our library.  It amazed me to see what

our island used to look like!  We are very fortunate to have all of

this natural resource all around us.
