Maine Windblade Challenge

Deer Isle – Stonington High School Students compete in Maine Wind Blade Challenge

On May 14th, the Physics class from Deer Isle – Stonington High School (DISHS) participated in the Maine Wind Blade Challenge  in Orono. This competition allows high school students from across Maine to design wind blades, construct them using composite materials, test and present their designs. The contest included 45 teams with over 200 students, most of which were shop classes. Our team, made up of five seniors (Blake, Layla, Erika, Jan and Hannah) had only one student with shop experience. Our approach used mathematical equations based on proven wind blade design formulas. Once the blades were constructed we covered them, along with the hub and spinner, with fiberglass using an infusion process at Morris Yachts. The hub is the part of the wind turbine that the blades are attached to. The spinner is used to maximize the air flow to the blades and attached to the center of the hub. The competition in Orono consisted of a presentation of our design to judges and then the testing of the blades for 3 minutes. Our blades performed well producing the second highest voltage of any of the blades at the competition. The blades performance was based on the maximum average power produced over 3 minutes.

We earned a fourth place overall (closer to first then fifth) which we were pleased with considering the amount of shop experience our team had as a whole.
